Warner says England 2018 World Cup bid doomed

LONDON (Reuters) - FIFA vice-president Jack Warner believes England is so unpopular as a footballing nation that any bid to host the 2018 World Cup finals is doomed.

In a BBC World Service interview to be broadcast on Saturday, Warner dismissed England's chances if FIFA's rotation policy brought the finals to Europe in 11 years' time. "If by chance, in 2018, the World Cup were to go to Europe, I'm quite sure, with the English luck as it is, they won't get it," Warner was quoted as saying in Port of Spain, Trinidad. "It'll be Italy, Spain, or it might even be France. Nobody in Europe likes England. "England -- who invented the sport -- has never had any impact on world football. England at no time has had the love and support of Europe. For Europe, England is an irritant."

Warner is president of CONCACAF, which runs the game in north and central America, along with the Caribbean -- a zone which could produce its own bid for the 2018 finals.

The 2006 tournament was in Germany, 2010 will be held in South Africa and Brazil is expected to be the host nation in 2014. FIFA is currently reviewing its policy on rotation.

Aware that England has some support for a bid to host the World Cup for the first time since winning it in 1966, Warner said: "There are moves to give it to England. I must fight that. "I really don't believe that we should just lay down and play dead to anyone who wants to take the World Cup from

I think he's being political in wanting the cup back in North America (Canadians listen up!). But I do suspect he's letting the cat out of the bag... it was just never spoken.

A little bit tongue in cheek perhaps?
I think he was referring to the fact that European countries tend to stick together, and sometimes behave in a jealous manner towards Englands earlier dominance (in most things, even sports). However, even we are aware that we aren't the world power that we used to be a few centuries ago.
Beckenbauer recently spoke in favour of an English bid but then people in power don't always say what they mean - and that includes Jack Warner.
Hey, we got the Olympics though! If we can host that successfully (which we can if people can put up with the cost), then why not give us the World Cup??

Warner is an idiot. CONCACAF is a joke to me even though I live in North America. I will retract this statement if Warner is able to succeed in bringing the World Cup to North American shores in 2018.

shifting it to CONCACAF is what should not happen. but the man knows what he is saying. is england indeed a serious underperformer?? i doubt that coz england never had any talent to underperform. to underperform you need to be good in the first place and fall below expectations. england's achevements are an indiciation of what it actually is - a joke in football!!!

even if england host it, it is impossible for them to win it unless all other teams died in an air crash and only england were left competing

italy would be a great choice given the fact is hasnt hosted since 1990. 2018 would indeed be around 30 years later. spain is also a good candidate but not necessarily for 2018, more for 2022.

italy has to get a chance to host and improve its stadiums and footballing infrastructure. hosting the WC is only the second greatest thing in the world after winning it.
