Will World Cup 2010 really be in South Africa???

It has always been a goal of mine to see a world cup, and for a while now 2010 has been the year of choice. However, talking to some South African friends of ours living in Canada, they suggest that I should not go because of the extreme dangers and violence that happens there everyday, only to be elavated by world cup. Also apparently the political situation there is getting worse, and violence is on the rise. Another friend of mine suggests they won't hold it there at all.
What should I think????
I live in Canada, as do my sources, and they are good friends who I hold in high esteems.
I do not know the the fundamentals or cause of the political strife in South Africa, but have no reason to believe they would feed me biased or racist information as they are kind honest people!
I want to go to South Africa, but I do not want to get into trouble.

i believe they have some backup sites picked out, but so far the cup will still be in Durban, SA

If Your African friends are white , so it is not a surprise they saying those things . Believe me the government of South Africa will take very good care of their guest , of course if You will behave like British drunk rowdie ,than You're in trouble even in such a police country like US .
