I agree with Christian's answer of San Antonio. Big growing city with a HUGE hispanic population. I've played there, though, and the down side would be the heat during the MLS season.

St. Louis and Seattle both have rich soccer traditions and deserve top flight clubs.

San Jose will be the next city to have a franchise. This could be as early as 2008.

1) Northern California (hopefully San Jose) - There's an established fan base and history from the Earthquakes. Existing rivalry with the LA Galaxy. Very financially rich area from all those tech companies.

2) Vancouver, Seattle, or Portland - There's no existing team in the Northwest. I'm leaning towards Vancouver, because there's only one professional team today (hockey- I don't really count the CFL). There's lot of money (look at real estate prices) and Toronto FC's success has shown Canada loves soccer. You could even establish a team in Vancouver and one in Seattle/Portland to create a regional rivalry.

3) Philadelphia - Big metropolitan market. Natural rivalry with the Red Bulls and DC United.

Seriously, MLS is only looking to add 3 more teams to make it 16 by the year 2010. They do want to add one immediately to even out the league to 14. They may consider 18 total after 2010, but no more teams after that.

I met an MLS front-office rep at a DC United game in pre-season, and his information pointed towards San Jose and Philadelphia being next. I would think these are safe bets for the next two.

But the future? It would be great to see Miami/Lauderdale/Tampa step up to MLS. I can't believe that Florida could not support a top-flight team in the 90's/2000's (they could during NASL, that's for sure). The Pacific NW has got to have an MLS team soon - all 3 big cities have great USL clubs, and it would be a shame to take away the base from either the Whitecaps, Sounders or Timbers, but one of those/all of those should move up!

St. Louis is a huge soccer town - they should *definitely* be on the radar, no? The Rochester Raging Rhinos could move up to MLS too - great atmosphere in that market.

Seattle. The Pacific Northwest is overdue for MLS representation.

1. San Jose - The natural rivalry with LA needs to be renewed.

2. Philadelphia - The 4th largest media market

3. New York *City* - The biggest market in the world needs at least one team IN the city.

4. Seattle - Big media market. MLS is hugely under-represented in the pacific northwest.

5. Cleveland - Could build a good rivalry with Columbus

6. St. Louis - Soccer in the US basically started here.

7. San Diego - Huge Mexican-American community. Put a Blanco type player here and watch the stadium sell out every weekend.

8. Portland - Great history in the NASL. Intense rivalry with the Seattle Sounders that could be recreated in MLS.

9. Detroit - There needs to be a team in the north; possibility of a rivalry developing with TFC.

10. Minnesota - Great history in the NASL with the Kicks averaging over 18,000 fans for many seasons.
