I'm sure you've all heard the news already.

What a phat contract 250m US is a ton of cash! I heard an interview of his and says he's played for 2 of the biggest clubs in the world already, so now he's looking for "a new challenge". Hahaha how's this for a challenge: how about WINNING something while you were at Real Madrid. How about leading England to some success while you were captain.

To me looking for a new challenge is code for "wow, those suckers are paying me a lot".

The real question I think, on a bigger scale, is what is this going to mean for the MLS and for football in North America? Is it going to help the game grow?

I see it having short term success. THere's definitely a lot of hype already. But will football gain popularity long term? Will more Europeans sign for MLS like they were for the NASL in the 70s?

Pele and Beckenbauer have already been here. The World Cup has been here in 1994 and I don't see much improvement so far.

The NASL has such potential and floundered b/c it expanded too fast and spent too much too quick. Please don't tell me that this isn't a sign of the same fate. On the other hand, it is cool that maybe more players will come. Beware though, we had some of the world's best before but we blew it.

Macedonian, that's why I love you Greeks. You analyse the situation and tell it like it is. Look at my name and avatar here, Whitecaps!!!! Not todays Whiteaps, but the original in the old NASL days. They were great days, when it died, it was a huge loss as that league had such potential. Beckham can make this league (MLS) happen, but if they spend too much on these dudes, and expand too quick (even though I am dying for Vancouver to have a team), then we are done. We will be finished. Lets stay positive though. I really hope it works.

We really need a team in Vancouver. With a new stadium we could definitely support it. I would even venture to say that we would do a better job of supporting a team here in Vancouver than Toronto will.

The City of Vancouver is currently considering a proposal for Whitecaps Waterfront Stadium, a new stadium to be built over the railway tracks east of Waterfront Station on Burrard Inlet. This 15,000 seat stadium would replace Swangard Stadium as the home field for the USL's Vancouver Whitecaps, with a proposed opening date in 2009. There is a fair degree of controversy with regards to this location; a Vancouver council session to debate the issue was extended to four nights to allow public input. Detractors view the proposed stadium as an incongruous addition to nearby historic Gastown that would block waterfront access and promote piecemeal development of the area. Proponents of the development feel that the stadium will attract new business to the downtown and Gastown areas, particularly since the soccer team tends to attract a family-oriented audience.

On July 11, 2006, Vancouver City Council voted unanimously to proceed with the stadium project, so long as the Whitecaps could meet certain conditions regarding land use.

Sounds like a lot of political horse shit. If Vancouver does not get this stadium, then the Whitecaps stay in the bush league. The only other option is to move out of Vancouver. Funny, they are paying for it themselves and they are still taking shit. What a joke!!!
