Pope, still up?

Just wondering how you feel about your next manager saying that United are
up there with Real Madrid as the best two sides in Europe.

WIll you be giving him as much support as you gave Houllier?

Thanks,

A. Dieu.

I just can't understand how you're "up there" with Real Madrid as the best
side in Europe Le Dozy. Like have you been to many finals in European
competition since your "new" manager arrived or something, coz like I've
forgotten about them. Maybe it's just paper talk and you believe it?

the

Two very honest posts here but the above is the reason for what you think of
as United arrogance. When you have people time after time saying that United
didn't win it, Arsenal and Liverpool lost it you are bound to have United
fans coming in here defending our record.

United won it only because Liverpool and Arsenal made mistakes? Of course.
When is it any different. If no one made mistakes every team would end up on
the same points.

Every team makes mistakes over the course of the season. The team who make
the fewest will win.

I'm sorry. Liverpool finished 5th. If West Brom were top of the table for
the first two games of last season did they chuck it away?

I could say that every season United didn't win the league we chucked it
away by not gaining enough points. Even in the 70s and 80s United would
often have a spell, usually before Christmas, sometimes in April when we'd
be top and look like winning it for once. Did we chuck it away? Or did
Liverpool keep winning it because they got more points in the end proving
them to be the better side?

And United in Europe. Our record in the last 19 years is head and shoulders
above any other English team but all we get is 'you should have won it
more'.

I have the utmost respect for the Liverpool sides of the 70s and 80s. They
weren't always the most exciting team to watch but they played football the
right way and their record in Europe is unmatched.

I think if some of you found it possible to say the same about United for
the last decade you would find that you gained a lot more respect and that
United fans wouldn't feel the need to keep pointing out how good we are all
the time.

A. Dieu.

Le Dieu:

if you want some respect from us then explain to us honestly why you think
Utd's "record [in Europe] in the last 19 years is head and shoulders above
any other English team."

These are the facts Le Dieu: over the past 19 years Liverpool have won the
European Champions Cup once. So have you. Liverpool have been losing
finalists once. You haven't. Liverpool have won the UEFA Cup once, which,
according to UEFA itself, is the second most important competition in
European football. You haven't. Liverpool have won the won the European
Super Cup once -- you've won the ECWC once. Much of a muchness.

The only difference is you've reached the Champions League quarter finals
seven or eight times out of ten, or something like that, and reached the
semis once as well, when you were beaten by German giants Leverkusen. Leeds
got as far as the semis as well, so big deal. And jumping for joy that
you've been to so many quarter finals is really a bit pathetic, don't you
think, a bit like some club celebrating finishing in the top eight in the
Premiership every season for the past ten years?

So for once and for all Le Dieu, just make it crystal clear why you are
"head and shoulders" above every other English team in Europe over the past
19 years (why 19 by the way?), when in that time Liverpool have won more top
European trophies than you, and have been to more finals.

Face it Le Dieu -- when Europeans think of English clubs in Europe they
think of Liverpool. I have personally witnessed frenchmen going into fits
of laughter when I suggested Manchester utd were head and shoulders above
every other English club in Europe, and were joint favourites to break their
duck and go beyond the quarters next year for the first time in donkeys'.
I've had Spaniards throw bottles of wine over my head when I've suggested
the same to them. I've had Germans fling full litre glasses of beer into my
face. I've watched Italians cry with laughter and implore the intercession
of St Anthony of Padua for my mental health.

Please Le Dieu -- put me out of my misery.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos
misericordes oculos ad nos converte. Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris
tui, nobis, post hoc exsilium, ostende.
O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Thanks Le Dieu.

I too am rapidly losing faith but hold on there is a glimmer of hope, we
played with Owen & Heskey yesterday and no long ball game. In fact we
haven't played the stupidly ineffective long ball game all pre-season.
Theres gotta be something good about that though eh?

PS: Ask any decent football supporter/player worth his salt in the world who
are the kings of Europe and the answer you will get is:
In Spain: Real Madrid
In Italy: AC Milan
In Germany: Bayern Munich
and In England: Liverpool.
There are only kings and pretenders to the throne!
