Criticism of Walter Smith, is it justified ?

I cannot believe the amount of criticism being levelled at Walter. All this nonsense about 'tactics'. He played Rangers to their strengths, with a pool of somewhat limited players, with exceptions of course. He took Sellick to the last game of the season for the SPL, won both domestic cups and got to a European final. Look at the players and the 'tactics' Walter used the first time around. Laudrup and Gazza. McCoist and Hateley. Trevor Steven and Derk Ferguson, (before he went off the rails). They totally dominated Scottish Football for almost a decade. And they played some great football. This time around, Walter has had little or no money to spend, yet has worked wonders. End of the day, I could not care less about tactics. First and foremost, I want to see Rangers being successful. Every time I read 'anti-football', I immediately think, 'sour grapes'.

I don't care if Sellick play attacking or otherwise, so why the hysteria about Rangers tactics ?
CFC, why were Rangers a far superior side ? Because Walter Smith made them that way !

Saoirse, I was very dissapointed in the line-up for the Zenit match, before a ball was kicked. He should have went for it. I value your opinion. To criticise his tactics in the UEFA final is justified. My point was people questioned his tactics on the whole. That I do not find fair.

If it is constructive regarding on how his tactics change for the better then criticism is good. If it is sheer bitterness at losing out on two trophies then theres little point going off on one because youre disappointed.

Walter has done far more than we expected from him and some are still slating him - thats football. He has done a great job and as emotions settle people will be able to look at the greater picture rather than the past couple of weeks.

i think there is actually more supporters of other teams slagging Walter than there is Ger's fans..yes we are disappointed, more so with the league loss than the uefa..but the guy has done wonders with a limited team..he played to his strengths and if some call that anti football fine..hopefully David Murray will give him decent money to bring in players to strengthen our squad and that can only be a good thing..next season will only be bigger and better for the Ger's..Mon the teddy bears

take into account how weaker other scottish teams were to that rangers side, walters tactics would have beat any of them easy enough so he wasnt that great.

he won with a vastly superior side.

now he realises they have to defend and hope to nick games, it works, it doesnt sometimes.

he plays to their limited strengths

the guy deserves credit though, but his players arent that bad, he bought them!!

celtic are a better football team, fans criticise coz as you said you wanted success and didnt get the big trophies this year.

to be honest yous didnt have to beat one quality side to win either of those trophies. which isnt good enough for rangers fans.

if rangers won more this year everyone would be happy, everyone was happy till it all went pete tong, then the tactics were blamed. he had no choice though.

i have to say even as a neutral it would be sickenin to see rangers win with the style they play, it makes a mockery of the principles of the game, however they dont break any rules so i guess you just gotta do what zenit and celtic do.

The level of football being played this season will be more successfull than it will next, when he hopefully adds creativity to the midfield, because we might win the title next year but we wont get to a european final.

Billy when walter came in he settled the team into a mentality of not losing and made us a hard team to beat by playing the holding midfield role and at the same time it let fergie push further up the park to support the strikers some will call it anti football but i would call it a good tactician and knowing your strengths.

It is so hard to believe that Criticism is being levelled at Walter Smith.
Just look where he has brought Rangers in One season from last year to now.
He is one of the best in the business and no way should, Rangers get on his back. he was only minutes from history and then everyone would have been giving him the praise he is due.

Billy i like to think of my self as fair. I criticize Watty, for not being positive enough in a European final . He left Darcheville up front on his own, after saying he was going to attack in numbers . He didnt make his first sub till abou 20 min to go , he gave Boyd 5 or so min, in my opinion the game had gone by this point. The point i make is Rangers would have been as well to lose 3 or 4 nil, rather than the 2 he did lose by. He should have went for it. how many euro finals do you get to. Im not slagging Smith it's called constructive criticism, and i am allowed an opinion.
