(R/T) Brasileirão 2008 - Round 36, Nov 22-23

Well... can't say they don't deserve it. Congrats for the hexa.

As a trivia, I don't think SP had ever won three titles in a row in
the Paulista league. Haven't looked it up recently, though, but IIRC
this was true a while ago.

Winnable games? You see, that's what I was thinking too, since neither
Coritiba nor Vitória have anything else to play for, and are already
solidly inside the Sudamericana zone. However, in this round we had...

.... which is good, I guess, since it shows (as if any more evidence
was needed) that these midtable, "uninterested" teams can be a lot
more dangerous than we usually give them credit for. And as Atlético-
MG has shown us, just one round ago in fact...

Next round, Náutico hosts Atlético-PR, and I really doubt Atlético
will have what it takes to beat them at the Aflitos. So, Nautico
winning, they go to 43 points against Atlético's 42. If we don't beat
Coritiba, it is over in Round 37. If Atlético wins by some miracle, or
draws, 43-41 or 45-40. A draw would not mathematically relegate us,
but it would take a miracle to avoid the drop in the last round in São
Januário...

And I had resigned myself to have to watch us play the likes of Avaí,
Barueri and Santo André next season :-) thinking that our schedule, at
the end, was softer than our rivals'... I'm still trying to believe,
but this loss was such a heartbreaker... I'm lost for words, really.
The team was brave, the fans were loud, the stadium was packed, and SP
still won, with some sweat, but deservedly, unquestionably so.

But this has been a rough year for Vasco. Lots of mistakes on and off
the pitch, many of which can be attributed to the political war that
divides the club nowadays, and which are fairly reflected by 19 losses
in 36 games in this Brasileirão... Well, let's see what happens.
Though I can't say I'm optimistic, really, some hope still lies in the
back of my mind... Vasco is known as the "time da virada" (team of
comebacks) for a reason, after all.

Não tá morto quem peleia...

Yep, three trophies in a row are unprecedented in São Paulo's history.
And they are going to do it it at the Brasileirão!

Also, it is possible that after those wins they will be more relaxed
when playing against us. But that's beyond the point, really, it's all
about how we perform, and whether we keep our nerves under control. As
poor as we are, we can beat those two teams.

Then again, Atlético clearly recovered in the end, at least enough to
make them safe. Náutico, OTOH, looks a tad more fragile. The biggest
problem is that Atlético doesn't really *need* to beat Náutico to be
safe.

[snip]

Hehe. I still believe we will. C'mon, what importance whatsoever that
other league will have if we play in the True Brasileirão against
Duque de Caxias, Guarani et al.?

Heartbreaker, true, but we must remember that we lost to Náutico and
Figueirense at home. Add these 6 points to our 37 and subtract 3 from
each os those two teams, and we would be all but safe as we type. (Not
to mention a tie with Atlético-PR at home and a loss to Ipatinga away,
all this in the second half of the season).

(...)

And the media still gives a microphone to the former president, so he
can "profit" from a situation he is mostly responsible for.

I hear you!

I'm obviously sad about Vasco's situation, but honestly, I've been
like this for a while now - and the desperate situation we find
ourselves into right now didn't really change that, just made it
worse.

In fact, the board change made me happier, but it was expected that
the troubled political environment would have consequences. Whatever
happens, I hope Roberto gets a hold on the situation real soon and we
start to recover the ground we lost in the last 7 years (on the field)
and 10+ years (outside of it).

The only sure thing, we'll be there all the way.

Abraço,

Luiz Mello
