It all fell apart this season, because he didn't adequately replace Flamini and Gilberto (and I admit, you were right about Gilberto, he's doing extremely well this season, albeit in a weaker league). Because free transfers are usually never "free". The transfer fee is embedded into the player's wages (at least for good players) and Arsenal has a wage structure. -- I don't mean to brag, I don't mean to boast, But I'm like hot butter on a breakfast toast. |

| Arsenal paying the price for Wenger's incompetence Alkamista wrote: Also has played in England, France, Italy, and Spain. With an international, predominately french speaking cast like that at Arsenal he would have an advantage. His Monaco side from 2002-2004 played a style of football that would be very suitable to Arsenal's squad. He also got the best of their careers out of players like Squilacci, Rothen, Prso, Nonda, and Giuly. Others failed with equally expensive squads at Inter, and the Special one is not doing any better. That is probably unfair. True. They are not currently available (in contrast to the five I named). I don't see either being a good fit with Arsenal's current squad, especially the rather dour Moyes. |

| Arsenal paying the price for Wenger's incompetence On Nov 24, 12:36*pm, MH Yes, but a key difference is that they failed to win a *full-strength* Serie A. Mancini OTOH, was literally gifted his first Scudetto, and won the second when both of their main rivals were severely handicapped (one was actually not even present). Only last year's Scudetto can be viewed as a true sense of accomplishment, and that too was with Juventus still in rebuild mode and Milan in the midst of a cyclical downturn. Note that I am not saying that Mancini has done inadequately in any way, form, or shape, but just that he hasn't truly been tested. Actually, it may be fair to McClaren ;-) He was after all an assistant coach at one of the greatest dynasties ever in club football. What has Donadoni ever accomplished? Granted he led Italy to EC qualification, something McClaren failed to do, but then again Italy's international pedigree dwarfs that of England. Yes, I realized after the fact that you were talking only about available coaches. I also agree about Moyes' style, but then again, like Rehagel once said, maybe he's just making do with what he's got. |
