Good question. The group was always going to be difficult, so I'd din't
give us more than a 40 % chance of going through. However, like last
time , we blew it in our first home game. Having taken the lead against
Jamaica, we allowed them to equalize, and then didn't take our chances
late in the game even though we looked the better side. De Guzman's shot
hitting the crossbar was more or less the end of our hopes of qualifying.
This last game we fielded an embarassingly inexperienced squad, which
comes close to being contrary to the competitive spirit of the
tournament. I guess the chances of Jamaica advancing were remote enough
that it didn't make a huge difference.
Dale Mitchell has to go. He has not done a good job in team selection,
in managing egos (though Brennan is certainly not good enough for a
guaranteed starting spot), and in tactics (managing only 2 points from
six goals scored is pathetic; losing or drawing games in which you held
the lead is also a hallmark of poor tactics).
Glad to see Honduras go through. They play nicely, and I actually think
that if they finish 4th they have a decent chance against
Chile/Uruguay/Colombia or whoever. They may finish 3rd or higher, though.
I think you may be a bit premature on this SGE thing. Last time Mexico
were in a SF group with Jamaica and Honduras, they also lost to both
away from home , and finished with only 12 points, behind Jamaica with
13. St. Vincent were the other team, so much weaker than Canada.
The coach at the time, Bora Milutinovic, was not fired. Strangely, he
was fired after the hex (or maybe towards the end of it) after leading
his team undefefeated (4 wins, six draws plus 16 GD) through that stage
(and in first place).
