Ok so 'holding' is now agreed to be the equivalent of the Italian
'regista'. I prefer "deep lying playmaker" as the better English term
since 'holding' was associated so much with Makelele at Chelsea, and
he was every bit the defensive lynch pin of the midfield. Essien can
do this job but he is so much more, he can pass, run through the lines
and shoot. Interestingly, Mascherano is a defensive midfielder for
Argentina but often times more of a deep playmaker for Liverpool,
especially last year when he had ousted Alonso from that role. As to
registas, Pirlo and Xavi are the obvious choices though I would rate
an inform Guti just as highly.

Then there are the advanced "playmakers", the trequartistas, the
classic No.10: the player that everyone looks to give the ball to at
the earliest convenience.
Riquelme is tha man in this position. Ronaldinho is a trequartista at
heart who starts and stays for long stretches on the left. Gerrard is
not bad but he is more box to box.

Kaka is the weird one. He is neither a striker (even a deep one), nor
a true playmaker, has no defensive game and also scores his fair share
of goals. He is essentially an old style winger (i.e. a dribbler, a
give and go kind of player) playing through the middle and the inside
(right,left) channels.

I always use Milan as an example of midfield roles, because everyone
knows the players and choudl be able to agree on the roles:

DM/Destroyer: Gattuso
Tackling, harassing, pressing. Usually opts for the simple pass. Other
examples: Mascherano, Essien, Diarra

Deeplying playmaker/Regista: Pirlo
Positioning, good range of passing, opening and dictating play from the
midfield. Other examples: Xabi Alonso, Xavi

Playmaker/Fantasista/10: Kaka
This doesnt even need an explanation

Gerrard and Lampard are a different proposition of playmaker. Not as
skillfull, not as much close control or dribbling. More straight
forward, relying on power and long shots. A bit more defensive duties.

Actually, this is the most ambiguous one in the current day and age.
Zidane is gone, Riquelme and Totti will soon be gone. With that we may
see the end of the traditional #10, at least until the game returns to
value this role, which is a big if. In today's game the closest thing
would be a player in an advanced position through whom most of the
team's offense is channeled. In that regard Gerrard, Lampard, Xavi,
Kaka, Ronaldinho could all be considered playmakers.

In England, simply Central Midfielder, no?

Fabregas, Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes are all generally considred box-to-
box midfielders.

Ronaldinho, yes. Elano, maybe for Man City but for Brazil he's used
much more deeper. Modric, a classic playmaker. Arshavin a classic
trequartista. Nasri, a modern type playmaker which is combo of a
winger and the old trequartistas.

This year I'd give the nod to Zlatan.
