Question on Pirlo

If he is so the conductor of the Italian orchestra, and the team is so
limited without him, where would you rank him among the great Italian
midfielders of all-time?

Didn't most everyone think he wasn't playing well this year? or at least
thought so before this week end?

The question was more about his career. It's been my observation that
legends are really created after they are gone. I'm sure history will
remember Pirlo as one of the more influential Italian midfielders.

I imagine he'll be ranked very highly. He's considerably better at
international level than club level.

True, and even when not playing well he finds ways to contribute, like on
free kick duty.

Interesting question. Particularly since I think the general perception
is that Italy historically produces great keepers, defenders, and
forwards. (MFs? Not so much.)

Question on Pirlo

In my experience, he has no parallel in Italian football. He is like a
superior version of Carlos Valderrama, the closest player, in my
opinion. So it's hard to compare him to great Italians of previous
eras (the Riveras, Mazzolas, etc.). Italy doesn't normally play with a
conductor, so this is a new situation. Pirlo has already made history,
and he may one day be part of an Italian best team of all time.

A great player, a singular player, we are lucky to have seen him and
to continue to see him play.

Best,

smt

Agreed, only because he plays in the traditional DM position, even though he
started playing in the same position as Rivera, etc..

No, Italy have always played with a conductor (even though defensive), but
never of his calibre. Albertini, etc...

That's also because Italy have never played a playmaker in the DM position
until Ancelotti did with Milan and Lippi emulated it in the national team.

If Italy would have played a Rivera or Antognoni as a DM, then they might
have been as effective as Pirlo.

The advantage that Pirlo has over a traditional DM is that he doesn't have
to defend, like
Albertini, etc...had to.

Agreed!
