Interesting decision. Trap belongs on the list of the most successful club
coaches ever, but his stint at the head of the Italian NT was very
disappointing. Any comments from Irish fans?

And what next, Lippi to take the Scotland job?

Already filled. Burley, IIRC.

No. He also crapped out at Stuttgart. He is way, way past it.

He had two stints at Bayern. The first one (1994-1995) lasted one year and
can reasonably be classified as a disaster (6th place). The second one
lasted two years (1996-1998): he won the title in the first year, and came
second the following year. Overall, that should probably be considered
positive. Plus, he left us the unforgettable "Strunz" tirade. Bruce can fill
us in with more.

As for Benfica, he led them to their first title after 11 years of
domination by Porto (with Boavista and Sporting also chipping in). I can
guess that his style wasn't appreciated too much by Portuguese fans. Fact
is, after he left it has been Porto on top again. I think his record at
Benfica should be described as an unqualified success.

He also won the Austrian league at Salzburg in his first year there, and is
in a strong position to repeat. My understanding though is that Salzburg
outspends its competitors by a significant margin, so that should be taken
into account.

But maybe his most significanty accomplishment is to lead Inter to its last
meaningful league title, before they even became virgins.

People didn't like him because of his style but he did a lot to build
the young players in that first stint who later became dependables. He
did take us to the CL semis with a severely injury-weakened team.

He lost the plot 1997-98 when Rehhagel's Lautern were taking the league
and Trap couldn't motivate the players. The season was salvaged with
the DFB Cup. But the main reason this stint is seen so badly is the
comparison with Hitzfeld's run which came after.

As Sven noted, the real disasters were later... Stuttgart and Salzburg
especially, and I guess the Benfica stint wasn't exactly a success
either.

You say:

And then:

So maybe he should be given some credit for Hitzfeld's successes, since he
brought up some of the young players who eventually made up the core of
Hitzfeld's team? Which players, by the way?

At Salzburg he has won a championship and is in the running for a second
one. With the money at his disposal he should have done better in European
competition, but I can't possibly see how you can call this a disaster. At
Benfica he won the championship, their only one in the last 15 years. Again,
that would be a success by most people's standards. Related question: has
Capello been a success as the coach of Real Madrid? Two one-year stints, two
championships, both coming after long strings of Barcelona wins. Sure, he
didn't please the Bernabeu crowd, but would you call him a disater?

His only real failure was Stuttgart.

Rumors are that he wants to add Liam Brady and Claudio Gentile to his
coaching staff. If I were an Ireland fan, I'd be pretty excited. I also
thinks he fits is well with their character. He is slightly Jacky
Charltonesque.

He may be an interesting guy, but his style is ultraconservative. I
still remember his gross mistake during the European cup in Portugal,
sending everybody back to conserve and finally losing to Sweden. Maybe
it will work for Ireland, but don't expect a lot of fireworks. By the
way, his work in Portugal was a success, not a failure as stated. He
won with Benfica, kind of a big event for them.

Best,

SMT

From that lot, only Kuffour, Babbel and Zickler remained for Hitzfeld.
But they weren't the central players of Hitzfeld from 99-01. That were
Basler, Matthäus and Effenberg, and after Basler and Matthäus left
in spring 2000 (which very likely cost Bayern the CL title that year,
the team of 99 and 2000 was stronger than the team 2001, which finally
won it), the team axis was Kahn - Effenberg - Elber (shades of Maier -
Beckenbauer - Müller!).

I agree. Benfica is at the moment like Real in the early nineties. They
have fallen far behind Porto, and even Sporting seems to have overtaken
them. Trappatoni stemmed this tide for a year or so.

As for his remarkable lack of success with the italian team, I think,
there was a fair amount of bad luck involved. Losing to South Korea
by a fluke goal (a defender deflects a harmless cross just into the
foot of an attacker, who has not had the slightiest chance to score
in the 88 minutes before) and a golden goal, which was a bit supported
by rather average refereeing. Sweden-Denmark ending 2-2 was also
extremely unlucky (although we all had a good laugh back then, of
course).

I'm not sure what he can do for Ireland. I wouldn't write him
off at the start.

Joachim
