For those who don't know Simmons, he's a very popular 'voice of the
fan' columnist for ESPN. He's a very good indicator of what the
average North American sports fan of reasonable intelligence is
thinking about.

He's been becoming more and more strident about the creeping disaster
that is North American sports, and it'll be interesting to see his
thoughts after a full EPL season.

BTW, if any non North-American readers are going to post condescending
replies to the article, please include your analysis on every NFL team
so we can see how easy it is to be extremely knowledgable about a sport
you just started following.

whilst I can appreciate your view

a) only a fool would post about anything he knows SFA about!

b)as this is a football sorry, soccer board ,would it not be very bad
manners to post about another sport wether you are aux fait or not???

so why would any non north american reader(your words) do as you
request??(trolls excepted)

Actually I took this bait and went to read the article in order to
critique the hell out of it, but the guy writes so well in a light,
entertaining style it disarmed me completely.

Damn, he almost convinced me to support the team he ends up going for.

Uhm..Arsenal are NOTHING like the Red Sox. Arsenal won the EPL three
times in the last 8 years. Sox won once in 86 years via a Wild Card
slot. Newcastle are more like The Red Sox....I should know, I support
both.

Fever Pitch the book - Written about/by an Arsenal fan
Fever Pitch the recent movie - Filmed about a Red Sox fan

I'm guessing that's where he's getting the similarity from

There are some factual errors, but on the whole it was an entertaining
read. I just knew he was going to pick Spurs when I was still on page
one, though.

Maybe, but it looks like he pulled most of the stuff directly from the
e-mails he got, 99% of which appeared to claim that the writer's team
was just like the Red Sox.

Entertaining read as usual. Someone should tell him that the good teams
never make it on to Channel 613 though
