Wayne Rooney?

My soccer friends at school always say this thing about Wayne Rooney. Whenever somebody messes up in soccer they go " Ladies and gentlemen Wayne Rooney". And sometimes they randomly say "Welcome to the premiership", with an accent.

Why do they say this, is it an inside joke, or did I miss something?

Wayne Rooney is one of the best soccer player in Europe. He plays center forward with Manchester United. He was rather emotional in his younger years but today is behaves like a true sportsman. Don't joke about this great player.

they probably just dont like wayne rooney and regard him as a mad player. even though he is one of the best in the world
