| I think Argentina ALWAYS has a shot at winning the World Cup. After not qualifying in 1974, they retooled with a young analytical coach named Menotti, which proved to be the best player-coach combination for the typically passionate players on the squad. He organized a collective team mentality which led them to victory in 1978 on home turf. In many ways, the 2006 team reminded me a lot of the '78 squad: young, fast, emotional, killer instincts in the strikers (el matador Kempes :-)), a calm and collected captain who orchestrated from the mid-field (Passarella), and even curly haired Coloccini reminded me of a young Tarantini, who was tall with a big curly mane, and who played defence in '78.
This team had all the ingredients to win except two: luck and the best defence. Italy was obviously a better defence because they kept Germany out of their goal even through overtime, but equally obviously, Argentina had a better offence because they were able to score on Germany in the first half, whereas the Italians lucked out at the end of overtime with what looked like a cheap copy of Maxi's goal against Mexico (same angle, but Maxi's was 10 times more spectacular). The luck factor ran out for Argentina during the second half of the match against Germany when Pato got injured, and Pekerman made the crucial mistake of relying on defence to win the game.
The majority of the fans in Argentina want Pekerman to remain, even though he has already tended his resignation. this is telling because they recognize that he put together something great and are willing to overlook the second half of the last game. I think AFA would be wise to keep him, and instruct him to solidify the backfield.
I know you want to see people respond with calls for Maradona to be coach, but I don't see that as a good move. Unquestionaby, the guy was a genius at play, and no one today comes close to the genius he was in 86. But that does not mean he can coach. Just because I speak English or Spanish fluently, or even eloquently, doesn't mean I can teach someone how to speak either. A coach, just like a good teacher, must not only know the skill they are teaching, but also how to teach that skill. Pekerman has proven his coaching abilities with the minors, whereas Maradona tried a little coaching in Racing, but he either gave up or was not as successful as hoped.
I say strengthen the backfield and keep Pekerman and the cup is Argentine in 2010!!!! |
