I think it is possible. JCD was ineffective for a couple of reasons. Firstly he was not getting the through balls to run on to and, secondly he was getting out muscled for the fifty-fifty balls. Rangers really needed someone who could run at the Russian defence and my preference would have been for a Burke or a Beasley rather than Novo. Much as I admire Novo's work rate and attitude I think he is limited as a footballer. I also agree that we needed Cousin up front. We missed the physical presence he offered.
As the game went on it became evident that the first team to score would win. Zenit are a decent team but they were not that much better than Rangers. If Rangers had just a little more quality in midfield and up front then the game was winnable. |
